The processing flow of our mouthpieces
How do we do it!
In this video we have tried to condense the processing flow of our mouthpieces in a few minutes. Part of the video montage is a sax section entirely made up of artists who have chosen CG Mouthpiece Italy for their sound.
Obviously the manufacturing processes are longer, not to mention the study and prototyping part which in some cases took several weeks. This is to achieve the creation of a type of embouchure that had the sound and emission characteristics that we had set for ourselves: in what context will it be played? in a harmoniously crowded context? what sonic pressures will it have to counteract to emerge? for which genre do we want it to be more suitable? is it intended for students, beginners or professionals? ..and so on. From here it is already clear that decisions must be made.
It goes without saying that this initial part of prototyping has also given us several discoveries and surprises. The possibilities of combining the variables that structure a saxophone mouthpiece are innumerable: length of the facing, development of the curve that determines the opening, baffle, window and its tracks, size and shape of the room as well as its position. The choice of materials has a discreet impact on the final sound .. I would say that there are plenty of combinations!
It is well known that particular combinations of the above parameters have made history, we already know that they will work. As a musician who has a good collection of mouthpieces, including « historical » ones, I know this from experience.
But it is one thing to know it because it is a consolidated practice, a fact and another to know it because you have faced a path of discovery based on your own research « in the field », including the experience of what « doesn’t work » and therefore why it does not work.
Experience is perhaps the most important database!
And it is from here, also thanks to the technologies currently available, that experimentation and research start: knowledge, experience and skilled craftsmanship meet the most modern technologies in order to create products of excellence!
